Back
in 1946, after World War II, 20-year old twins Doris and Dorothy
Boughton obtained a Speed Graphic press camera and set off to Yosemite to take some black and white photos. There
they met two young college students from UC San Francisco who were
working at Yosemite Lodge for the summer and who escorted them to all
the interesting sites.
This was about the same time Ansel Adams was becoming well known for his photos. Dorothy has a photo she took from the same spot where Ansel Adams must have stood to take the same view that summer.
The girls’ pictures include Mirror Lake
when there was water in it; view from inside Wawona Tunnel when no
trees hid the valley, a 1946 car going through the Wawona Tunnel Tree
and a favorite “the Honeymooners.” Of course, that was the year before Dorothy married Red Davis and raised 7 children. One shot they missed – the fire fall from Glacier Point above Camp Curry.
